Verity Baird / Fine Art MA

My art practice is oil painting. The work I make is conceptual and has associations to kitsch art and abstract expressionism. I am a feminist and I am interested in the Post-Structuralists, Feminist writers such as Helen Cixous and Julia Kristeva, who promote the idea of self-authorisation and a unisex approach to writing. I use the aesthetic of oil paint to defy patriarchal design by creating compositions that rupture universally known graphics or painting styles. I also like to rebel against contemporary surveillance and patriarchal control by covering up my thoughts within the painting.

Specifically I am fascinated by cartoon characters that are revered for becoming feminist icons in Western culture. My research considers the effects that the appropriations of feminist cartoons have on culture and the expectations placed on women today.
